Overview of Interpupillary Distance Adjustment Technologies in VR Headsets

Interpupillary Distance (IPD) refers to the distance between the centers of the pupils of the eyes. IPD typically ranges from about 54 mm to 78 mm in adults, varying with age, gender and race. To achieve the ideal image quality in VR (including Mixed Reality) headsets, the center of the user’s eyes should be aligned along the same lines as the centers of lenses and displays. Incorrect IPD settings in VR can result in cut-off edges of the viewed image and visual blurriness, leading to issues such as cybersickness, eye strain and dizziness. Therefore, incorporating IPD adjustment modules to adjust the distance between lenses is crucial to ensure that each of the VR user’s eyes perceive the image correctly, creating a coherent and comfortable stereoscopic vision.
