Global Smartwatch Market Rebounds; Huawei and Fire-Boltt Hit New Peaks

  • The global smartwatch market rebounded with a 9% YoY rise in Q3 2023 shipments, continuing the upward trend from the previous quarter.
  • Growth was propelled by strong performances in the Indian market, particularly from Fire-Boltt, and Huawei’s significant surge in China.
  • Outside India, the rise in high-specification HLOS smartwatches, driven by new Apple, Huawei, and Samsung releases, dominated the market.

Seoul, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Beijing, London, Buenos Aires, San Diego – December 01, 2023

Global smartwatch shipments increased 9% YoY in Q3 2023, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest Global Smartwatch Model Tracker. After experiencing a slowdown earlier this year, the smartwatch market regained momentum in Q2 2023 and continued the positive trend in Q3 as well. The primary drivers of this growth were the sustained strong performance of the Indian market led by Fire-Boltt, as well as Huawei’s tremendous rebound in China.

Research Analyst Woojin Son said, “There is significant value in examining the growth drivers of the global smartwatch market in Q3 2023. Amid a global economic slowdown, most consumer device markets like smartphones are still experiencing stagnation compared to a year ago. In contrast, the smartwatch market has recorded YoY growth for two consecutive quarters in both premium and budget segments. Notably, High-level Operating System (HLOS)* smartwatches, typically featuring higher specification and price, have grown largely driven by Huawei in Q3 2023 as the company posted its highest quarterly performance ever. Most of this surge occurred in the Chinese domestic market, coupled with the launch of new Huawei 5G smartphones.”

Son added, “Meanwhile, the Indian market, which has been powerfully leading the Basic* smartwatch sector, maintained robust growth in the quarter. The country contributed to 35% of total global shipments, securing its position as the leader in the global market for the third consecutive quarter.”

Market Summary

  • Apple delivered its best-ever Q3 performance, with a 7% YoY increase in shipments. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given that the latest Apple Watch, a key product in their lineup, was released slightly later than the previous year. The strong shipments of the 2nd-generation SE model significantly contributed to the growth of the industry leader.
  • Huawei witnessed an impressive 56% YoY increase in overall shipments for the quarter, with HLOS smartwatches seeing a remarkable 122% surge. Its Watch 4 and 4 Pro series, released in Q2 2023, and the Watch GT 4, released in Q3 2023, have achieved good popularity. The increase in Huawei’s shipments was due to the return of its smartphones and the bundled sales model induced by various sales channels.
  • Samsung experienced a 19% YoY decline in shipments. However, the new products released in August exhibited only a 3% drop compared to the previous ones. In essence, the decrease in Samsung smartwatch shipments this quarter appears to be primarily attributed to a sharper decline of legacy models. Meanwhile, the proportion of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic significantly increased compared to last year’s 5 Pro, contributing to the rise in the ASP of the brand.
  • Fire-Boltt reclaimed its leadership position in India after recording its all-time highest quarterly shipments. All the three major Indian brands — Fire-Boltt, Noise and boAt — are experiencing a slower growth rate than before. However, this is interpreted not as a sign of sluggishness, but rather as an indication of entering a phase of stabilization.

*Types of smartwatches:

  • HLOS smartwatch: Electronic watch running a high-level OS, such as Watch OS (Apple) or Wear OS (Samsung), with the ability to install third-party apps.
  • Basic smartwatch: Electronic watch running a lighter version of an OS, with no ability to install third-party apps.

2023 Global Smartphone Shipments to Hit Lowest Level in Almost a Decade

  • Global smartphone shipments in 2023 are expected to shrink by 5% YoY to reach 1.2 billion.
  • However, the shipments are expected to increase by 3% YoY in Q4 2023.
  • The iPhone 15 Pro series’ share in the overall iPhone 15 series is projected to increase to 65% in Q4 2023.
  • India will become Apple’s new growth focus, but the brand’s underperformance in China will hinder its growth in 2024.

London, San Diego, Seoul, New Delhi, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong – November 30, 2023

Global smartphone shipments in 2023 are projected to decline 5% YoY to reach 1.2 billion, the lowest level in almost a decade, according to Counterpoint Research’s Smartphone 360 Global Smartphone Shipment Forecast. However, the shipments are expected to increase by 3% YoY in Q4 2023 to reach 312 million units.

North America (NAM) and Europe’s shipments are expected to remain stagnant. But China and emerging markets such as the Middle East and Africa (MEA) and India have managed to break out from their declines and will recover to become the new drivers of growth in the smartphone market from Q4 2023 onwards.

Apple, the usual market leader in Q4 with its newly launched series, is expected to record a volume decline of 3% YoY in Q4 2023, mainly due to Huawei’s aggressive expansion in China and prolonged delay in smartphone upgrades in Japan. However, Apple will try to offset the underperformance in volume terms by growing in value terms with a better product mix. In Q4 2022, the shipment share of the iPhone 14 Pro series in the entire iPhone 14 series was 61%. In Q4 2023, however, the iPhone 15 Pro series’ portion in the iPhone 15 series is projected to increase to 65%.

After destocking efforts end with a relatively healthy inventory by the year-end, smartphone shipments in 2024 are projected to grow by 3% YoY. We can also expect a recovery focused on emerging markets, backed by increasing consumer confidence and improving macroeconomic conditions.

Apple will be just in line with the market growth in 2024 while facing pressures in its traditional markets. The retention of high interest rates in the US, which hit consumer spending, and intensifying competition in China’s premium smartphone market, mainly due to Huawei, are expected to hinder Apple’s growth throughout 2024.

Huawei, driven by its newly launched Mate 60 5G series and older P-series 4G devices, recorded an enormous success in Q3 2023. Assuming that Huawei can expand the production of its Kirin SoCs via partnerships, the brand is expected to continue to grow 37% YoY in 2024.

Associate Director Liz Lee said, “India, maintaining its momentum for premiumization, is expected to become Apple’s new growth focus. Apple’s India shipments are predicted to grow 23% YoY in 2024. However, due to its underperformance against Huawei in China, Apple’s global market share will unavoidably decline slightly YoY in Q4 2023 and across 2024.”

Nearly Two-thirds of High-end Smartphone Users in China are Open to Foldables: Survey

  • 64% of high-end smartphone users in China are willing to purchase a foldable smartphone for their next purchase.
  • Trying new form factor (22%) and owning a bigger screen (21%) are key reasons driving preference for foldable design.
  • 89% of potential foldable buyers prefer book-type foldable design for its wide and large display and multi-tasking feature.
  • Reputation and the latest technology are the key factors during brand selection.
  • The durability of foldables is the top area of concern among people.

Beijing, New Delhi, London, Jakarta, Boston, Toronto, Taipei, Seoul – November 23, 2023

A recent consumer survey conducted by Counterpoint Research spotlights a strong interest in foldable smartphones among Chinese consumers. As many as 64% of smartphone users in the $400 and above price bracket in China are considering foldables for their next purchase, with 20% already committed to the idea and an additional 44% weighing it as an option.

Android users’ interest in foldable smartphones is higher at 71%, while it is 58% for iOS users. This interest in foldables is particularly pronounced among current foldable phone users in the survey, who are eager to continue their experience with the emerging technology.

Though the big screen size of foldables attracts smartphone users, this enthusiasm is tempered by concerns over durability, prominence of the crease and the bulkiness of the device when the screen is folded, which are seen as the main barriers to widespread adoption.

Senior Analyst Arushi Chawla said, “With the smartphone market maturing and hence becoming tough to compete on the software side of things, people are looking forward to the foldable category as a stand-out factor. Multiple brands coming up with newer foldable generations are also building confidence among consumers. As a result, a significant proportion of the respondents aspire to purchase foldable smartphones in the near future. However, now consumers have also become better informed due to their rising dependence on smartphones and, therefore, hold certain concerns about the foldable technology.”

Durability of foldables is the top area (23%) the respondents want the products to improve. Comments on Chinese social media highlight complaints about the high cost of repairing foldables and disappointment over the robustness of product designs. Therefore, reputation in terms of quality and after-sales service becomes the top factor in brand selection.

Research Analyst Archie Zhang said, “Chinese OEMs are leading innovations in the foldable sector, striving to create devices that are both slimmer and lighter and appeal to consumers accustomed to the standard premium phones. This evolution is supported by significant investments in research and development, focusing on the mechanics of foldable hinges and the materials used, which are key to decreasing the body size and weight and increasing robustness.”

The survey also explores consumer expectations from book-type foldables. About 70% think foldables’ weight should be similar to or lighter than the smartphones they are using. Regarding thickness, most respondents think book-type foldables should not exceed 10 mm-12 mm when folded. Also, most users are willing to pay a price in the RMB 7,000-RMB 8,000(about $947-$1113) range for this foldable device type.

The Chinese foldable smartphone market has shown exponential growth this year, registering a 106% YoY increase in Q3. HONOR’s Magic V2 was the best-selling model in this quarter. From Q1 to Q3, the segment grew 90% with Huawei taking the biggest sales share.

Counterpoint Research

Counterpoint ResearchHONOR and other Chinese OEMs have stepped up foldable shipments while aiming for faster growth in the premium segment globally. This will make the global foldable market more competitive.

Senior Research Analyst Mengmeng Zhang said, “The Chinese foldable smartphone market is poised for double-digit growth in 2023, even against an anticipated overall market contraction of less than 5% YoY. With OEMs enhancing the durability, design and affordability of foldables, these devices are set to captivate a broader consumer base. Besides, unique software capabilities like advanced multi-tasking and seamless inner-outer screen integration are expected to further boost the appeal of foldable smartphones.”

(This Counterpoint Research survey was sponsored by HONOR to understand the preference towards foldable smartphones among users in the $400 and above price band in China. The survey, having a sample size of more than 1,000 respondents, was conducted online in both English and Mandarin languages. We expect the survey results to have a statistical precision of +/- 4%.)

Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, Boston, New Delhi, London – November 14, 2023

China’s smartphone market is signalling a recovery with the first four weeks of October growing on average 11% YoY according to Counterpoint Research’s latest Smartphone 360 Weekly Tracker. Huawei has been the standout brand, accounting for the bulk of net adds share over the period.

“Whether it’s YoY or more short-term WoW, the numbers are suggesting a recovery. There’s some momentum building to be sure,” observes Mengmeng Zhang, senior analyst for China. “This is auspicious as we head into reporting season for the 11.11 sales period.”

With the launch of its new Kirin powered device, Huawei is making a resurgence.  “The clear standout in October has been Huawei with its turnaround on the back of its Mate 60 series devices.  Growth has been stellar with its new launch marketing and strong media coverage around its ‘Made in China’ chipset,” notes China analyst Archie Zhang. “Demand continues to be high double-digits and we’re also seeing a halo effect, with other models from the vendor performing well.”

Production issues are a recurring theme this year, with both Huawei and Apple coming under pressure to deliver on new devices.  The latter is experiencing some issues with specific color variants on the Pro Max, resulting in extended wait times and higher prices on some e-commerce platforms.

Huawei stock shortages are the result of much higher-than-expected demand and the resulting strain from its component supply chain and EMS providers.  “Huawei’s ability to scale up to this new normal will be a major determinant not just for their own growth, but for the broader market,” states Ivan Lam, senior analyst for manufacturing.  “How they managed the 11.11 period is Huawei’s first true test.  Indicators are showing overall sales to be up but how much Huawei contributed to that outperformance is the tell for the rest of the quarter.”

The global smartphone market growth saw a decline of 7% YoY, shipping 328 million units in Q1 2022 caused by the ongoing component shortages, as well as COVID resurgence at the beginning of the quarter and the Russia-Ukraine war towards the end. The global smartphone market also, as expected, had a seasonal decline of 12% QoQ. The component supply crunch was felt more severely by major Chinese OEMs such as Xiaomi, OPPO* and vivo as compared with Samsung, which seems to have overcome component shortages that affected its supply last year, as evidenced by higher-than-expected growth in its shipments despite a late flagship launch.

Consequently, Samsung regained the top spot from Apple which had emerged as the biggest smartphone vendor globally in Q4 2021 thanks to its latest iPhone 13 series.

With its share at around 22.5% of the global smartphone shipments in Q1 2022, China remains the world’s biggest smartphone market. This is down from around 25.6% in Q1 2021 as China’s economy grew slower than expected due to COVID-related lockdowns and shipment volumes declined by over 19% YoY. While China’s share of global smartphone market growth (shipments) remains flat QoQ thanks to a small peak in demand during Chinese New Year and as the global smartphone market declined QoQ due to seasonality, in terms of absolute shipments, China saw a quarterly decline of over 12%.

HONOR has emerged as the biggest smartphone player in China, chipping into vivo and OPPO*’s shares and stepping into the position previously held by Huawei from which it recently separated. Although vivo did not succeed in regaining the top position due to HONOR’s rise at a time when it is itself facing component shortages, it did recover somewhat thanks to its newly launched mid-end S12 series that is popular with younger customers and the affordable the Y series which showed strong performance in the quarter.

Top 5 List

• China’s smartphone shipments fell 2% YoY in Q3 2023, narrowing the YoY decline sequentially. This was due to OEMs restocking in preparation for new model launches.

• Huawei’s shipments soared 41% YoY as its newly launched Mate 60 series with Kirin SoC gained momentum immediately after the launch. Apple experienced a slight YoY uptick in shipments driven by the newly launched iPhone 15 series, but the initial supply constraints impacted its overall performance. HONOR also increased YoY mainly driven by the hot-selling HONOR X50 and HONOR 90. OnePlus’ robust growth drove up OPPO’s shipments.

• We expect to see a YoY growth in Q4 2023 as all Chinese OEMs are expected to launch their new models then. It is worth noting that this will come on last year’s low base, as many Chinese cities were still under lockdowns during the same period last year.

Q2 2023 Highlights

Published Date: August 17, 2022

• Smartphone shipments in China fell 4% YoY in Q2 2023 though OEMs provided big promotions during the 618 festival. This was due to weak demands resulting from economic headwinds.

• Apple saw the biggest YoY growth in Q2 as the OEM offered generous price-cuts for the iPhone 14 series during the 618 period. Besides, it still has no competitors in the high-end market which has proven to be more resilient during market headwinds.

• OPPO’s share grew slightly (YoY) as OnePlus showed strong growth piggybacking of the channel support from OPPO. OnePlus compensated for OPPO’s limited online presence by using its online-centric business model to effectively tap into the segment.

• vivo and Xiaomi saw YoY declines as weak economy dampened consumer spending.

• HONOR’s share dropped significantly (YoY) partially because Huawei’s growth posted a challenge for HONOR.

• We anticipate an improvement in smartphone shipments during H2 compared to H1, a strong rebound does not seem to be on the horizon as challenges that affected the performance in H1 are likely to persist.

Q1 2023 Highlights

Published Date: May 16, 2022

• China’s smartphone shipments declined 8% YoY in Q1 2023, reaching their lowest level since Q1 2020. However, this was an improvement from the double-digit YoY declines seen in previous quarters as well as a sign of bottoming out.

• Apple’s market share in China increased to 20% in Q1 2023 from 18% in Q1 2022. This was driven by its continued expansion in China’s premium segment with more aggressive promotion and marketing campaigns for the iPhone 14 series.

• In contrast, all the major Android OEMs saw YoY declines as demand in the mass market remained weak. OEMs remained cautious in ramping up production to manage demand carefully and avoid any unhealthy inventory build-up in the market.

• Despite this caution, we expect the market to further recover in H2 2023, as inventory pressure continues to ease and consumer sentiments improve.

Q3 2023 China Smartphone Sales Fall 3% Signaling Recovery Getting Closer

  • In Q3 2023, smartphone sales in China declined 3% YoY in a sign the market could be closer to bottoming out.
  • Huawei was the big winner, growing 37% YoY on the back of the newly launched Mate 60 series, which is powered by its SoC Kirin 9000S.
  • Major OEMs’ performance varied significantly YoY, which resulted in market ranking changes. HONOR took the top spot as vivo and OPPO lost significant ground.
  • Apple lost share in Q3 2023 as some demand was fulfilled in Q1 and Q2 and because the iPhone 15’s launch sales volume was lower than that of the iPhone 14 series.

Beijing, New Delhi, Hong Kong, London, San Diego, Buenos Aires, Seoul – October 26, 2023

In a sign China’s smartphone market may be closer to bottoming out, its sales fell 3% YoY in Q3 2023, narrowing the YoY decline sequentially, according to Counterpoint’s Market Pulse Service. Major OEMs’ performance varied significantly compared to the same period last year, which resulted in market ranking changes. HONOR took the top spot even as vivo and OPPO lost significant ground.

Notes: OPPO includes OnePlus; Xiaomi includes Redmi; vivo includes iQOO; Figures may not add up to 100% due to rounding.

During Q3 2023, the performance of most leading OEMs except Huawei was lackluster. On the back of the Kirin SoC’s return, Huawei launched the Mate 60 Pro suddenly at the end of August. It has made a huge splash in the market, contributing big to Huawei’s smartphone sales growth of 37% YoY in Q3 2023. Commenting on Huawei’s performance, Senior Analyst Ivan Lam said, “Although the Mate 60’s sales are under the Pioneer Program and mostly carried out through the brand’s offline and online channels, the product has quickly garnered massive attention. Huawei is striving to ramp up production to catch up with the demand.”

HONOR led the market with an 18.3% share largely driven by the newly launched HONOR X50 and HONOR 90. Xiaomi increased YoY on the back of strong sales of the Redmi K and Note series driven by competitive promotional prices. On the slight increase in these two brands’ market share, Research Analyst Alicia Gong said, “Both HONOR and Xiaomi are focusing on offering more affordable mid-range products with promotional prices to both retailers and consumers to offset any potential downward pressure. This strategy has proven to be effective.”

OPPO, vivo and Apple all experienced double-digit decreases in sales. Lam said, “iPhone sales declined as some demand for older models was fulfilled in Q1 and Q2 2023 due to earlier-than-expected price cuts by channels, which were not offset by the official price adjustment. This was compounded by initial supply constraints faced by the iPhone 15 series, which resulted in lower sales compared to the iPhone 14 series for the launch period. However, traditional offline dominators OPPO and vivo were impacted by weaker spending in Tier 2 and lower cities, as well as being slightly less aggressive in promotions than HONOR and Xiaomi.”

During the quarter, sales of foldable smartphone models continued to grow. The OPPO Find N2 Flip remained the top-selling clamshell-type foldable, while the HONOR Magic V2 ranked first among book-type models. As we enter Q4, all OEMs are gearing up to improve overall performance and end the year with strong sales.

Global Smartphone Market Reaches its Lowest Q3 Levels in a Decade; Apple’s Share at 16%

  • Global smartphone sell-through declined 8% YoY but grew 2% QoQ in Q3 2023.
  • Samsung led the market but declined YoY to reach its lowest quarterly level in the last decade.
  • A shorter period of iPhone 15 availability in Q3 led to a shift in demand to the next quarter.
  • The top five brands’ cumulative share declined in Q3 as challengers’ share grew.
  • HONOR, Huawei and Transsion Group were among the only top brands to record YoY growth

Global smartphone sell-through volumes fell 8% YoY in Q3 2023, the ninth consecutive quarter to record a decline, but grew 2% QoQ, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse service. Volumes declined YoY largely due to slower than expected recovery in consumer demand. But the market’s QoQ growth, especially the positive performance in September despite one full week less of sales of the new iPhones, is likely a sign of positive news ahead.

Samsung continued to lead the global market, capturing a fifth of the total sales in Q3. The new generation of foldables received a mixed response, with the Flip 5 outselling its counterpart by nearly twice as much. However, Samsung’s A-series models remained market leaders in mid-price bands. Apple came in second with a 16% market share despite the limited availability of iPhone 15 series, which has been received well so far.

Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo rounded off the top five, with the three recording YoY declines. In Q3, all these brands worked towards strengthening their positions in key markets like China and India, while continuing to slow down expansionary efforts in overseas markets.

HONOR, Huawei and Transsion Group gained share and were among the only brands to record YoY growth in Q3. Huawei grew driven by the launch of the Mate 60 series in China, while HONOR’s growth was led by strong overseas performance. Transsion brands continued to expand while also benefiting from the recovery in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) market.

MEA was the only region to record YoY growth in Q3, owing to improvements in macroeconomic indicators. Most developed markets, like North America, Western Europe and South Korea, recorded steep declines. However, we expect most developed markets to grow in Q4 largely due to the delayed effect of the iPhone launch.

Following a strong September, we expect the momentum to continue till the year-end, beginning with the full impact of the iPhone 15 series along with the arrival of the festive season in India, followed by the 11.11 sales event in China and ending with the Christmas and end-of-year promotions across regions. In Q4 2023, we expect the market to halt its series of YoY declines.

However, the market is expected to decline for the full year of 2023, reaching its lowest level in the decade largely due to a shift in device replacement patterns, particularly in developed markets. Notably, the recovery of emerging markets before the global market and the growth of brands outside of the top five indicate the shifting dynamics and opportunities in the global smartphone market.
