South Korea 5G Updates, May 2021

The number of 5G users in South Korea stood at 14.5 million in March 2021, accounting for 20% of the total mobile subscribers (71.1 million) and 66% of the LTE subscribers due to lower-than-expected 5G coverage and network quality, along with an absence of killer content services. However, the continuous investment and technological advancement in the 5G industry is expected to drive replacement demand from LTE subscriptions through this year. South Korea’s 5G smartphone market is expected to grow 50% YoY in 2021, accounting for 87% of the overall smartphone market.

South Korea 5G Updates, November 2020

In April 2019, South Korea became the first country in the world to commercially launch a 5G mobile network. Although subscriptions increased faster than expected in the early stage of 5G commercialization as well as when compared to the early LTE period, the growth has slowed down since Q4 2019 due to the gaps in 5G coverage, network quality issues and absence of killer services. However, the situation will gradually change.
