Market Pulse || July 2016 Edition

Today we published the July edition of our popular Market Pulse report. This edition covers the market for June 2016.

The key takeaways in this edition of Market Pulse are as follows:

  • Overall handset demand remained tepid in June. Economic concerns remain a burden on consumer confidence in some markets. Europe was slightly better in June but the impact of the UK’s ‘Brexit’ vote and the rising number of violent incidents across the region will do little to improve the situation in July. August is normally seasonally weak so 3Q overall is likely to remain challenging.
  • While the biggest players remained fairly stable in terms of market share, Oppo leapt up the rankings globally and took a surprise number 1 position in China (press release on Oppo’s market leading moves here). Oppo is blending its long time excellence in product design and brand image with a more aggressive marketing strategy. This is paying off, for now.
  • Huawei also remains strong – taking the number 1 position in China for the whole of 2Q, but losing out in June to Oppo.
  • We attended a Qualcomm’s IoT event, where the company set out its strategy to benefit from the massive growth that’s already underway in the IoT sector. Qualcomm has considerable assets that it is able to apply to the opportunity. Its approach is similar to that of the smartphone business – develop a range of solutions, offering everything from a single chip to a full reference platform. It is enabling a range of players from small OEMs/ODMs to large cities to benefit from the efficiencies afforded by IoT.
  • Mexico is one of the largest markets in Latin America – surpassed only by Brazil. However it is heavily controlled by Telcel; the open market remains modest. Furthermore development of the online opportunity is progressing only slowly due to limited credit/debit card penetration and high-levels of fraud. The recent entrance of AT&T, through acquisition, and Amazon, through organic expansion, are yet to make much of a difference. Read more in our Country Brief.
