"The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi automotive alliance announced the production release of the Alliance Intelligent Cloud. It is a new platform that is enabling the three car-makers to deliver connected services in vehicles sold across 200 markets. Microsoft said that these cars will be the first vehicles powered by the Microsoft Connected Vehicle Platform available to consumers at scale. The Alliance Intelligent Cloud can connect the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance vehicles with future smart cities infrastructure and potential future partners. Interestingly, Microsoft seems to be winning in competition with Amazon in this cloud automotive market, having already partnered with Volkswagen, Toyota, Volvo, BMW, LGE, and others for the development of connected cars. The reason why major auto OEMs tend to choose Microsoft as a partner rather than Amazon is presumably because of the worry that Amazon could break into the market and show up as a competitor someday. In fact, Amazon has been investing in electric vehicles and self-driving cars aggressively it seems to have influenced the competitive landscape." - Liz Lee
