We have initiated our Smart Wearables coverage. Counterpoint’s focus areas are Smart Watches, Activity Trackers and Augmented/Virtual Reality devices which are the most prominent in the emerging smart wearable industry.
In this third report of a three piece series we cover Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) devices. The general Smart Wearables Overview will be repeated in each of the three reports as one may just want to read one of the reports.
Augmented reality is the concept of overlaying digital images onto the real-world environment. Virtual Reality is the creation of a wholly artificial environment into which the user is 'transported'. In augmented reality the user may still move around his or her environment. In virtual reality this is typically not possible or wise.
Both markets are in an early stage, but they hold considerable potential with estimated unit volumes to exceed 10 Million units by 2020. The development of new and advancing technologies in smartphones, tablets, sensors and 3D cameras aids the progress and viability for the industry.
