As the market continues to stall, the competitive pressure is increasing on many marginal players. Apple has carved a solid chunk of the market that waxes and wanes based on its product cycle, but it gains few new converts, and loses few. In the Android sector, Samsung continues to receive punishment by continued chips to its share position. These are generally inflicted by Chinese brands, but HMD Nokia is now starting to gain momentum. The wild card is the impact to ZTE that we see starting in April, but the level and duration of its enforced exit remain unclear.
Sell-through improved in April thanks mainly to China, India and other emerging markets. However, sell-in was lower again despite sell-in of new models. This was against a background of channels working-down inventory of older models that do not align to the latest design trends.
