Market Monitor Q2 2014: The Rise of the Local Kings

The global mobile phone industry reached 441 million units phones shipments in Q2 2014, a growth of 6% over Q2 2013. Shipments increased for most regions, except for North America and Europe that once again has dropped. Asia accounted for more than half of the total shipments in the quarter followed by Europe. In terms of countries, more than one-fourth of the shipment was driven by China, followed by India with 13% of the total shipment volume.

Smartphone remained the key segment reaching 70% of the share of the total handset shipments. This segment has grown 24.8% (y-o-y) reaching 310 million shipments in Q2 2014. Smartphones grew across all major geographies, except Canada and Korea, which overall market decrease has pushed down the smartphone market. Emerging markets has become key contributors driving demand, and once again smartphone market was driven by Asian countries followed by Europe.

Meanwhile, feature phones demand continued to fall in each of the regions globally. However Japan has experience the surge of feature phone, mainly due to some Chinese brands, still it only represents less than 1% of the global feature phone shipments volume. India and South East Asia remain key feature phone markets, Asia alone accounts for more than half of the global feature phone shipments.
