"Intel demonstrated an autonomous vehicle at CES 2020 equipped with 12 cameras, no other sensors. The EyeQ5 chip is creating a 3D model from 2D images to better sense the environment.
In November 2019, Mobileye made a strategic partnership with NIO to develop Level-4 autonomous vehicles. Using cameras alone can reduce costs and speed development of higher levels of autonomy. Most autonomous systems use radar and lidar together with cameras to get information about the vehicle’s surroundings, but Mobileye is testing the potential of only using a camera-based system. Tesla also believes that camera-based systems are sufficient for full autonomy.
