HiSilicon No Longer Huawei’s Captive Chipmaker

"Huawei will sell 4G modem chipsets in an open market. Huawei has been keeping its subsidiary chipmaker, HiSilicon, as an internal unit. Shanghai HiSilicon, established in April 2019, will be an exclusively external chip supplier, while Shenzhen HiSilicon remains an internal supplier. HiSilicon is reshaping its business segments around intelligent vision computing (AI cameras) and IoT connectivity, to reinforce the integration of 5G, AI, and IoT. As there is no resolution of the US blacklisting issue amid the prolonged US and China trade conflicts, Huawei is struggling in the smartphone business and is looking for new opportunities in chipset developments. As Huawei opens chip supply, it will likely take share in the premium chipset market and increase the competitive pressure on the leading player, Qualcomm." - Angela Cheon
