European consumers are having a tough time. Dire financial conditions, spiralling energy prices and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine have resulted in bills soaring to record highs and consumer confidence plumbing record lows. Against this backdrop, Apple released the iPhone 14, which turned out to be Apple’s weakest major smartphone launch for a decade.

This report assesses the reasons for Apple’s struggle, and discusses whether Xiaomi’s resurgence has anything to do with it.
