"Time of Flight sensors have been around for years with applications in automotive, industrial, drones and Kinect type cameras. However, with the adoption of 3D ToF by Apple for Face ID biometrics, we are witnessing the increasing proliferation of 3D ToF sensors in smartphones not only in front-facing cameras for biometrics, gestures (LG G8 ThinQ) but also in the rear cameras of smartphones (Honor View 20). The top rear-camera use-cases include 3D depth ranging, assisted focusing, Augmented Reality, reduction in light flicker in cameras and more. Multiple applications were demoed at MWC and was one of the hottest topics at the show. Infineon, ST Micro are some of the leading suppliers. The use-cases and applications leveraging 3D ToF is going to help OEMs differentiate in 2019. We expect most premium smartphones to have 3D ToF designed in with some sporting more than two sensors soon." - Neil Shah
