Powering IoT Devices: Batteries, Energy Harvesting or Both?

"While batteries have been a starting point for powering IoT, energy-harvesting technologies, which derive power from external sources such as solar, thermal, wind and vibration, have set their sights on IoT. However, the problem is that it does not generate sufficient energy quickly enough for most applications and is still much more expensive than current battery technology. For now, energy-harvesting solutions looks like a natural fit for small sensors and IoT devices used in places where the batteries are hard to replace. Generally, the consistency, cost, and lifespan of devices running on ordinary lithium-ion batteries along with the power-saving designs leave most of the market with no good functional or economic reason to switch. However, energy harvesting will continue to evolve, and ultimately the option is destined to play a big role in creating ultra-low-power systems." - Liz Lee
