In Q3 2024, TSMC surpassed expectations with a remarkable 64% market share, bolstered by high utilization rates at its N5 and N3 nodes and fueled by robust AI accelerator demand and strong seasonal smartphone sales. Samsung Foundry retained the second position with a 12% market share, supported by incremental gains in its 4nm and 5nm platforms, though it faced headwinds from softer Android smartphone demand. SMIC ranked third, holding a 6% share, as it capitalized on a recovery in China's domestic demand and strong momentum in mature nodes like 28nm. UMC and GlobalFoundries followed with 5% each, with both benefitting from stabilization in key segments like IoT and communications infrastructure, even as the broader non-AI demand recovery remained sluggish.
In Q3 2024, the 5/4nm nodes dominated with a 24% market share, driven by surging AI demand, including NVIDIA's Blackwell GPUs, which offset weakness in other sectors. The 3nm nodes climbed to second place with a 13% share, reflecting full utilization rates at TSMC's N3 process as product ramps from Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek and Intel gained momentum. The 7/6nm nodes followed with an 11% share, maintaining steady performance across multiple applications. The 28/22nm nodes accounted for 10% of the market, benefiting from stable demand in CIS and DDIC applications. Meanwhile, the 16/14/12nm nodes held 7% as demand remained constrained by a sluggish recovery in non-AI-related markets.
