TECNO’s second-generation foldable phones, the PHANTOM V Fold2 and PHANTOM V Flip2 come with iterative upgrades such as an improved camera system with a 50MP main camera, 70W Ultra Charge, and a bigger cover screen for Flip2. Both the PHANTOM V Fold2 and Flip2 are powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ and MediaTek Dimensity 8020, respectively.

The key highlight of these TECNO foldables is the AI features that enhance creativity and productivity for the users. The TECNO AI suite and Ella voice assistant enable users to experience AI capabilities such as text translation, document summarization, AI imaging, AI smart assistant and much more. TECNO has also integrated Google’s Circle to Search feature, which makes it easier to search for the onscreen object, be it from a website or video.

We have been using both the TECNO PHANTOM foldable for a few weeks, and here is our summary of the AI features on TECNO foldable phones.

AIGC portrait: Create a different look for the picture

The AIGC is a separate mode in the camera app that generates four different styles of professional-looking portraits from one picture. The user can choose from photo styles such as Lifestyle, Love, Graduation, and Childhood and use them as their social media avatar. Below are some examples of AIGC portraits generated in different childhood styles.

AI CAM: Universal tone and instant beautification effect

One of the camera options is the AI CAM which automatically gives a beautification effect that enhances skin tone, color, and balanced lighting, thanks to computational AI imaging and universal tone.

AI Portrait: Be creative to create a beautiful portrait

The AI effect is another enhancement that can be used while taking portrait photos. With this feature, the user can manually fine-tune a person’s face or body parts. There are several options to modify the face and body area such as smooth skin texture, skin color, face shapes, and body part shapes. The intensity of the effects can be controlled to produce changes in appearance. Besides that, the AI Smart Beauty Effect and AI Smart Body Effect can provide instant beauty in pictures.

TECNO’s AI photo editor comes with AI Cutout and AI Eraser which helps users save time when dealing with image editing tasks.

AI Cutout: Cutting an object from the photo frame

The AI Cutout feature can take a cutout of an object in a photo which can be then pasted elsewhere. With one tap, the feature automatically recognizes and selects the object in the photo that the user wants to cut, which can then be copied, shared, or saved in the gallery. In the Gallery App, select a photo then tap the item to cut out. Once the item has been cut out, select the “copy, share, save” option in the pop-menu. The alternative to saving the cutout object is by dragging it to the smart hub window as temporary storage which can later be dragged into different apps like Notepad, social media, or communication apps.

AI Eraser: Simple way to remove unwanted items in the photo frame

Next is the AI eraser tool that can erase unwanted items in the photo frame. Simply go to the Gallery App, select the photo, tap edit, tap “More” then tap AI Eraser. Select the thickness of the brush then select and apply the brush in the unwanted items. Finally, tap Save to save it in the gallery.

AI Wallpaper Generator: Unleash your imagination

Another interesting AI feature is the AI Wallpaper Generator. The feature allows the user to attain different looks for images from different presets available or create from imagination. The user can take photos, use images in the gallery or type keywords. The image generator has three presets based on the Featured (Japanese Comic, American Comics, Mecha, Games), Customs (India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea) and Cute pets (Comics, Blocks, Mecha). The final product can be saved and set as a wallpaper.
To use the AI Wallpaper Generator, go to Settings > Personalization > AI Wallpaper Generator > choose Generate Based on Images or Text.

With the text-based generator, the user can get more creative by typing a text prompt, and then choosing between one of the seven presets.

AI Video Call Effects: More fun with different backgrounds and AR avatars

This AI function can be activated to make video calls livelier or for privacy purposes when, for example, the user can receive a video call from a friend or coworker while they are still not presentable or if they do not want the caller to know their location. To activate the feature before starting a video call > swipe left to bring up the hidden smart menu > Tap to turn on the background changer or T-moji.

AI Translation: Break language barriers to communicate easily

This feature is very helpful as it can translate multiple foreign languages into the user’s native language. It can translate text, voice and even images in real-time as you speak. The user or recipient can speak or type what they want to convey and the AI translation feature translates it into the language of choosing in real-time. This feature can be used to practice a foreign language as well. It can also translate an entire webpage.

The real-time translation can also be used during a call. To activate, simply tap the Real-Time Call Translator and the recipient gets a notification that the call is being translated. As of now, there are 3 languages available Arabic, English and French.

AI Summarization: Save time by condensing long content

This feature is helpful when the user does not have time to read an entire document. Ella app can scan and provide a summary quickly and answer questions regarding the document. A document can be uploaded on the webpage, or paragraphs can be copy-pasted on the Ella app.

AI Email-writing Assistant: Get your email ready within seconds

The email writing assistant will help prepare an email in the Ella app which can be copied and pasted into email or messaging apps. It works in multiple languages. This feature is part of the hybrid AI that needs an internet connection to work.

AI Artboard: Don’t hold back your imagination!

Let’s look at the AI Artboard where AI generates images based on a sketch or pattern. The user can make a rough sketch of anything, and the AI generates a refined image based on the sketch. The AI-generated image can then be further changed and edited using the available presets like Comics, Pixel art, Digital Art, or Cyberpunk. The feature can be found in the Notepad > tap AI Artboard > draw or sketch > Tap AI Generat. The user can further regenerate the image or choose different art styles available.

Math Assist: Making math friendly

This feature can help users deal with math easily and it is available only on the PHANTOM V Fold2 currently. Math assistant is available in the notepad > tap Artboard > tap pencil > write number calculation.

Circle to Search

Searching for information online has become a daily activity. For example, when we tend to look online for more information when we come across new products on social media or while simply browsing. Long pressing the home button activates the Circle to Search feature after which users can look for anything online by drawing a circle around the item. It can be relevant information about the item or shopping options. To enable the Circle to Search, go to –> Settings > System > System Navigation > More settings> toggle “Circle to Search”.

Other key highlights of the PHANTOM V Fold2 and Flip2 are the Fold2’s split screen with floating windows and the Flip2’s bigger cover screen.

PHANTOM V Fold2 Split Screen & Floating Window: Making multitasking easier

The large screen of the PHANTOM V Fold2 provides a better view when using multiple apps simultaneously. The phone enables a vertical or horizontal split screen and the app position can be changed to the right-left when vertical or the top-bottom when horizontal. Also, it has floating windows that enable certain apps as listed in the smart panel to be on the top of each split screen. A great feature for multitasking.

PHANTOM V Flip2 Cover Screen: Conveniently on-the-go

When folded, the device’s cover screen can be used conveniently with one hand and can be stored neatly in the pocket making it an ideal on-the-go device. The cover screen is very functional, displaying the most popular app shortcuts, like music streaming, social media, text messages, maps, and browsers. The cover screen can also be used to make normal calls and video calls. The main camera function can be fully accessed allowing the user to take photos and videos conveniently. It can also display a full keyboard if required. With the cover screen, the user can experience the main screen in a smaller format, which is very helpful in crowded places where movement is limited, like on the MRT or a crowded bus.

Final Thoughts

The improvements on TECNO’s new PHANTOM V Fold2 and Flip2, including the AI capabilities, will provide added value for owners. However, further development is still required, for example, languages for translation and AI voice command can be further improved and more variety and details can be brough in generated images. Most OEMs are now looking at AI capabilities, which is why a differentiation in these AI features can be highly advantageous for TECNO.
