This growth was on the back of critical technical advancements in 50MP lineups and strengthening partnership with Chinese smartphone OEMs.
2025 is expected to record consecutive double-digit growth driven by growing LOFIC and multispectral demands and the shift to domestic 1-inch and 200MP alternatives.
China’s top three CMOS image sensor companies – OmniVision, Galaxycore and Smartsens – saw significant growth in their CIS sales for smartphone applications in 2024, with their revenues reaching $1.37 billion, $0.5 billion and $0.46 billion, respectively. For the first time, Chinese image sensor companies’ market share as a whole exceeded 17% of the global smartphone CIS market in revenue terms.
Chinese Image Sensor Vendors Achieved Significant YoY Growth in 2024
These image sensor companies have upgraded their products leveraging proprietary technologies and diversified production capabilities. They can offer a broad range of 50MP image sensors, with pixel sizes extending from 0.6μm through to 1.6μm. they have also developed LOFIC and multispectral sensors customized to clients’ flagship products. Against this backdrop, they strengthened collaborations with Chinese OEMs including Huawei, Xiaomi and HONOR. Chinese smartphone OEMs are now widely adopting 50MP image sensors from the abovementioned companies, with the adoption gradually extending from mass-market smartphones to premium smartphones.
In 2025, there will be more intense competition between OmniVision, Smartsens and Galaxycore, leading to shipments of domestic 50MP sensors crossing the 200-million mark. OmniVison and Smartsens will gain greater content in 2025 in new flagship smartphones with the migration to domestic 1-inch sensors and increasing LOFIC adoption.
