Wirecutter’s Expert Advice on How to Navigate the New Tariffs

Even companies that make goods in the US typically import materials from other countries to make those goods. Those materials will now be subject to much higher taxes when they enter the US.

That doesn’t necessarily mean prices on all of those goods will go up in tandem with the tariff rates. Companies with big profit margins might eat some or all of the tariff costs without passing on price increases to customers.

But many, many companies—especially those with lower profit margins—are all but certain to raise prices if the tariffs hold.
