Samsung, the global consumer electronics and smartphone giant, took the early mover advantage in the AI race by bringing the first and most advanced GenAI smartphones to the market. The brand worked closely with its key partners Google and Qualcomm to bring ‘on-device’ as well as ‘cloud-based’ hybrid AI experiences to its consumers. However, the AI development trajectory is now moving from GenAI and entering the Agentic AI era.

From that perspective, we were fortunate to take a seat with Patrick Chomet, Executive Vice President at Samsung’s MX (Mobile Xperience) division, for a “Counterpoint Conversation” discussing Samsung’s AI journey and Galaxy AI becoming a benchmark for the industry.

The Interview

Key Takeaways from the Discussion:

  • Samsung's approach to design in the AI era focuses on holistic user experiences, where hardware and software are seamlessly integrated to enhance simplicity and add value.
  • Samsung’s One UI is transforming into a multimodal AI UI with the direction to make every interaction powered by intelligence. Galaxy AI is becoming a common factor across Samsung’s huge hardware ecosystem from smartphones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, smart ring, TVs, and appliances, making it intelligent and personalized.
  • The security and privacy-focused personalization and interaction between users and devices or among devices, leveraging its Knox solutions, is another differentiating factor for Samsung.
  • Samsung has several AI and GenAI features baked into the new S25 series intelligent information retrieval, enhancing communication, such as real-time translation and efficient multimedia editing.

Analyst Take:

  • Global GenAI smartphone shipments are estimated to exceed 400 million units in 2025 and jump to 726 million in 2026.
  • According to our recent GenAI survey, 73% of users have accessed GenAI through their smartphones. Meanwhile, 67% of US respondents plan to upgrade to a GenAI smartphone, the highest globally. Germany and France had the next best numbers, respectively.
  • In the Android camp, Samsung continues to dominate with a lion’s share in the premium GenAI-capable smartphone segment. Its Galaxy AI will also likely trickle down to the mainstream Galaxy A series in 2025 and 2026.
  • Apple has shown some promise with Apple Intelligence. However, the rollout has been limited – feature-wise and geographically. A major differentiator for Galaxy AI is that it is powered by a more advanced Google Gemini AI. Samsung has taken significant strides with its on-device AI capabilities in partnership with Qualcomm.
  • Samsung also has another advantage – smartphone x productivity x wearables x home play with Galaxy AI making it more scalable and powerful.
  • Samsung also has its work cut out to see how seamless the Galaxy AI would be across its ecosystem and how closely Samsung, Google and Qualcomm work with application developers to drive on-device AI experiences that are personalized with privacy in mind.
