  • Total global MiniLED panel shipments rose 20% YoY in 2024.
  • The growth was driven mainly by an increase in TV panel shipments as major Chinese TV brands proactively adopted MiniLED TV technology – especially COB design – which helped lower prices significantly.
  • Apple’s shipments rose 3.5% YoY, retaining its top position in notebook applications.
  • With their superior colour performance and the potential for further price reductions, RGB MiniLEDs are already putting substantial competitive pressure on OLED in TV applications.

Total global MiniLED shipments grew 20% YoY in 2024 driven mainly by increased applications in TVs, according to Counterpoint’s latest Semi-Annual MiniLED Backlight Technologies, Cost and Shipments Report, H1 2025. In tablets, MiniLED, which had the highest penetration in 2022, will drop to zero after 2025 as the iPad Pro switches to OLED from MiniLED. Meanwhile, Apple’s MacBook Pro retained its top position in the MiniLED notebook space. The total panel shipments of 14.2” and 16.2 MacBook Pro grew 10% YoY in 2024. However, Apple is expected to start adopting OLED by 2027, a move that will significantly hurt the growth of MiniLED in notebooks.

MiniLED panels in monitor applications jumped over 90% YoY in 2023 and will grow a further 3% by 2029. Apple is expected to start launching 27” MiniLED monitors by the end of 2026, which will stimulate adoption among other brands.

MiniLED TV shipments nearly doubled YoY in 2024, as Chinese TV brands such as TCL and Hisense actively adopted and promoted MiniLED. Meanwhile, South Korean giants Samsung and LG experienced a decline in shipments due to weaker competitiveness. Another brand worth watching is Xiaomi. Although it was relatively late to adopt MiniLED, its strong brand influence and product strategy led to significant growth in 2024. There is a high chance it will continue this growth trend into 2025.

Commenting on the market dynamics, Research Analyst Leo Liu said, “Major Chinese TV brands have been very aggressive in adopting MiniLED in TVs, particularly in COB design. The widespread adoption of COB has significantly reduced the production costs associated with MiniLED. Leveraging this advantage, TV manufacturers are actively introducing RGB MiniLED TVs. With superior color performance and the potential for further price reductions, RGB MiniLEDs are already putting substantial competitive pressure on OLED in TV applications. Driven by the aggressive promotion of major brands, RGB MiniLED TVs will experience explosive growth in the coming years.”

Counterpoint’s latest Semi-Annual MiniLED Backlight Technologies, Cost and Shipments report provides a comprehensive coverage of MiniLED cost analysis on mainstream applications and a detailed introduction on MiniLED-related technologies, such as LEDs, optics, driver IC and RGB MiniLED. The report also touches on shipments of key applications.
