2015-Q3: Battery Capacity Tracker Trends

Counterpoint has been using its unique model level sales to calculate the hardware specifications in smartphones. Our Battery Capacity Tracker reveals the following insights.

Handset Battery Capacity Market Share

  • Two out of five handsets has a Mid capacity battery (2000mAh – 3000mAh).
  • Battery with 3000mAh & above category already accounted for ~19% of all handsets sold in Q3-2015.

Additional Insights into brand level reveal the following:

  • Samsung is targeting the market with mid-capacity batteries. 50% of Samsung smartphones in Q3 2015 had a mid-capacity battery (2000mAh – 3000mAh ).
  • Apple is lacking in battery capacity although catering premium segment. Apple is trying to makeup this gap with their official launch of battery cases for iPhone 6 and 6S. It looks like a quick fix for Apple which will continue to have this battery problem if they maintain the super slim design.
  • In contrast Chinese OEM Xiaomi, who is targeting the value for money segment with high specs to differentiate their brand, is already selling the majority (~68%) of its phones with a high capacity battery (3000mAh & above) in it. Xiaomi is the leading brand in terms of battery capacity


Battery Capacity Analysis


  • 44% of the smartphones sold in Q3 2015 were in the <$100 price band and had an average battery capacity of 1518.5mAh.
  • But there is not much fluctuation in battery capacity between the $100-$200 and $200-$300 price band so the average capacity only differs by 4% with 2510.5mAh & 2606.1mAh respectively.
  • Interestingly the Premium Tier segment ($400+) has a lower battery capacity. This is because the segment is majorly Apple and also the competitors have introduced slick slim designs to compete with the iPhone. This will be an ongoing trend of design over utility. Battery packs and power banks will be a must for users in this category.
